Online Betting Gains Political Support as Blue Nominees Enter Casino Scene

(Bangkok).- The Senate responds to Bhumjaithai’s resistance by assembling a special team to assess casino legislation, while covert political actors continue to push for the legalization of online gambling.

Online Betting Gains Political Support as Blue Nominees Enter Casino Scene

The Senate’s Extraordinary Committee on the Study of "Entertainment Complexes" has officially begun its work. The committee held its first meeting on April 23, during which members voted to appoint the chair and other key positions.

Out of the 23 members present, 17 voted for Veerapun Suvannamai, also known as “Dr Vee,” from the blue faction, to serve as the committee chair. Most members viewed him as credible and neutral, and he also received backing from “external committee members.” This support was largely due to Dr Vee’s previously stated opposition to casinos, which he made clear prior to this appointment.

His rival, Senator Sorachat Wish Suwanprom, received five votes and was appointed as the first deputy chair—essentially a consolation role.

Split Perspectives on Casino Inclusion in Entertainment Complexes

Due to the diversity of the members, including senators from various factions and external experts. As a result, the committee's strategic direction has branched into multiple paths and perspectives.

The inaugural meeting became an open forum for members to express their views and establish their positions.

By the end of the session, a clear divide had emerged: the committee had split into two camps—those who supported and those who opposed the development of Entertainment Complexes that include casinos.

One faction firmly opposes the inclusion of casinos in entertainment complexes, arguing that the economic benefits do not outweigh the social and financial risks. They believe that legitimizing gambling could fuel addiction, crime, and economic instability, posing a challenge to the government’s policies and the Pheu Thai Party’s agenda.

Government Faces Resistance Over Gambling Legalisation

On the other side, proponents of entertainment complexes remain open to reviewing the legal framework and assessing potential economic advantages, including tourism revenue and foreign investment. Rather than outright supporting casinos, this group suggests studying the Entertainment Complex Business Act proposed by the Paetongtarn Shinawatra administration, seeking public understanding and reducing resistance to the broader project.

Beyond the casino debate, another major concern is online gambling regulation. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has been leading efforts to reform laws on online betting, officially aimed at curbing illegal operations. However, critics argue that these reforms could open doors to legalizing certain forms of online gambling, further complicating the committee’s objectives.

Key Appointments Shape Committee's Strategic Direction

The appointments within the committee also highlight key political and academic influences. Several notable figures were placed in strategic roles:

Chaiwat Junthirapong, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, was expected to become chair but was reassigned as an advisor due to concerns over his ties to the Buri Ram political faction.

Saensak Siriphanich, a former strategist for the Palang Pracharath Party, was appointed Deputy Secretary-General.

Kanyarat Kotphukhiew, a legal expert, also secured a Deputy Secretary-General position.

These appointments reflect a blend of political power and legal expertise, which will likely shape the committee’s final report and recommendations.

Online Gambling Reform Sparks Debate in Senate

As discussions unfold, many suspect the study on entertainment complexes extends beyond its stated purpose. Some argue it is part of a broader political strategy to transition underground gambling into a regulated and legalized industry, similar to the push for entertainment complexes. The economic incentives are undeniable, yet opponents continue to warn of long-term social consequences.

Moving forward, the committee will play a critical role in Thailand’s gambling policies. The government must balance economic opportunities with the risks of gambling legalization—whether in physical casinos or digital platforms. The final decision could reshape Thailand’s entertainment and economic landscape for years to come.
